Wild  Cordyceps

Bhutan is the last place in the world where cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) still thrive in the wild. Harvest, local trade and export are strictly managed and regulated by the government to ensure sustainability. As a licensed cordyceps exporter in Bhutan, we strive to become your exclusive source and partner for one of nature's rarest and most valuable gifts.

With a recorded history of over 700 years, wild cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) are highly coveted and prized in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for their health benefits. The global popularity of wild cordyceps began to sky-rocket toward the end of the 20th century. To keep up with the surging demand, attempts were made to domesticate it. Substitutes such as Cordyceps militaris were identified. And the global cordyceps industry as we know it today, worth billions of dollars, evolved.

Known as "Yar-tsa Guen-bu" in Bhutan, cordyceps grow in the wild at altitudes of over 4000msl in the rugged harsh Himalayas. Between May and June every year, the local mountain residents are permitted to forage for cordyceps for 3 to 4 weeks. The harvest is then traded throughout the year to middlemen and exporters.

"Yar-tsa Guen-bu" literally translates to "summer-grass winter-worm".

In order to promote sustainability and fair-trade, local sale and exports are strictly regulated and monitored by the government. Only registered and licensed businesses like Wild Bhutan Superfoods are allowed to export. Every shipment is inspected and certified by Bhutan Food & Drug Authority.
